Are You Keeping Yourself Accountable?

no need to read if you have no issue with this.

Consistency is the capacity to show up for something over and over

Accountability means you stay true to your word, that you can be counted on. You say what you're going to do and you do it.

Now I don't know about you but I find it much easier to be accountable to other people than to myself...

I always put others first and let my tasks fall to the wayside and end up on 'tomorrows' list.

This is fine for a while, I understand there is a lot to fit into 24 hours, and sometimes more often than not your stuff has to be put on the back-burner.

However! I plead with you not to let it stay there too long. Tomorrow can quickly turn into

Why do you think it is so hard to stay accountable to yourself?

All the information we need to get us to ANY position we want in life is out there we just have to execute.

It is all at our fingertips in this digital age. You can find out in 5 minutes How to -

Start getting fitter if you are unhappy with your physical condition

Start thinking clearly if you are in a tough mental state

Start building a business if you want to branch out on your own

It is ALL out there, and the dreams you have for a different life only back up the fact that you want to build and create something.

That is what you should be holding yourself accountable to.

I think not staying accountable to yourself stems from wanting to do way more than you literally have the time capabilities for.

Thinking that for some reason, all of a sudden just because we decided to set a goal, we are now superhuman and can get our tasks done at the same rate as a seasoned professional when we are starting up a bit rusty!

In the beginning it is always... Always going to take longer than you think to get things done, or even up and running!

But fear not!

How do you overcome this accountability issue I hear no one ask?

Start finding accountability groups, people, or third party apps.

A couple of tips when you are looking for accountability groups.

1. Pay for it

Don't panic! Your first one does not have to cost you and arm and a leg but if its free the likely hood of your excuses creeping in and taking over again is 99.9%

$$ Amount? - Think something thats going to sting if you don't follow through, but nothing thats going to break you financially.

If you want to go really radical have you heard of Anti-Charities?

Give a friend your money with the promise that if you don't complete the task you have assigned for yourself the money will be donated to a charity of their choice. an Anti-Charity is an organisation that supports a cause you do not believe in, or that is against your values.

So the motivation is pretty high to follow through!

2. Make sure the group has clear goals and guidelines

Sometimes these accountability groups, especially around social media content can quickly get quite spammy.

If you don't want to be reposting 1,389 other peoples content find a smaller group.

3. Be active in the group!

If you do join a challenge or an accountability group it is on you to get the most out of it. Just by joining, this does not mean the work will now automatically get done.

Break It Down

If any of the above resonates with you maybe it's time to look in to an accountability tool.

A Personal Trainer - holds you accountable to your health commitments

A Therapist - holds you accountable to your mental commitments

A Business Coach - holds you accountable to your business commitments

Mine started with my fitness - at the time a personal trainer cost too much and doing it myself online wasn't happening so I found a happy medium - I signed up for group classes!

Bonus with all of this - you get to meet awesome people along the way.

Make a commitment to yourself that this year you will figure out how to keep yourself accountable to your goals. Here is the magic step missing from the graphic above:

  1. Define your dream

  2. Turn your dream into goals

  3. Break your goals into steps

  4. Find an accountability group that aligns with your goals

  5. Take it one step at a time

If your first group 'didn't work' - Have a think why

Then go look again.
